As we near the end of winter and move closer into a much warmer period of the year, our thirst for something a little more sweet and refreshing becomes apparent. A good starting point is purchasing a spirit that whilst being affordable doesn’t compromise on quality. Substation No. 41 is an excellent purchase.

The first thing I notice after removing the cap is the sweet scent of vanilla mixed with an undertone of toffee. I found it to be a pleasant surprise when compared to other rums on the market that have a bigger following, sometimes purely based on their namesake. Golden amber in colour, each bottle comes with the well known, Brisbane’s Breakfast Creek Hotel stamp of approval, so you know you’re purchasing a quality product developed by a number of local Artisan Rum experts and lovers who head up the Substation No. 41 Rum Bar.

This relatively new spirit on the market has been commissioned by these knowledgeable folk from Brisbane who noticed the gap in the market for a rum that’s not only easy drinking but is a cut above the rest in terms of flavour profile.

Our nation’s palette is well served here with a sweeter taste blended from Australian molasses and aged for 2 years. The hint of oak that lingers pleasantly in after taste lends Substation No. 41 to both a simple on the rocks number but also means it combines well to make a smooth mixed cocktail. Either way this surprisingly easy on the wallet buy can be enjoyed with friends before a night out or last over a few sessions at home.

Experimenting at home when left to my own devices, Substation No. 41’s versatility really shined when mixed in a number of different ways. Moving into the warmer months, it’s time to become a little more creative when enjoying a refreshing drink and not succumb to some less than sub standard “pre‐mix” drinks that are full of sugar.



I decided to create my own take on the classic Bermudan Dark & Stormy cocktail. An easy to concoct, thirst –quenching cocktail that I believe really brings Substation No. 41’s sweeter qualities to the forefront. The rum’s natural soft flavour means you won’t have to add any extra sugar to the mix or bother with tried mixers designed as impulse purchases at your local bottle shop. Here’s a list of ingredients and steps you’ll need to follow to quench your thirst.


• 45 ml -­‐Substation No. 41 Rum

• 30 ml Lime Juice (go organic so its not your average club pour)

• 15 ml or a dash of Agave Syrup (easy to find in your local health food store and a natural sweetener!)

• Fill half the glass with ginger beer (its not hard to find a good brand these days so avoid the standard ginger ale)

• Ice to the top

• Raspberry Syrup (Optional to taste and look impressive to your mates)

• Lime shell to garnish Substation 41 also mixed well with Coconut water, once again demonstrating its versatility if you’re not a fan of ginger beer.
