Blues is an often under looked genre by the Wider Public. Enter Gary Clark Jr
I often come across people comparing Gary Clark Jr to Jimi Hendrix. It’s such a lazy comparison. Sure GCJ is a Blistering talent, with the same skin colour (Lazy, nothing racially discriminating). Yet GCJ is cultivating a style that pays homage to the greats such as Hendrix, Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan, while at the same time incorporating influences from RnB (Evident in his 2014 Grammy win in the Best Traditional RnB Performance category for his song, ‘Please Come Home’), hip hop, soul and a love of heavier, hard rock sounds, as can be clearly heard on the fuzz heavy distortion of ‘Numb’.
For the Hip Hop heads out there, check out the Blak and Blu Mixtape. A collection of Gary’s tracks given the Hip Hop treatment. My pick of the songs is title track Blak and Blu, perfectly paired with Big K.R.I.T’s smooth flow.
A native of the self proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World, Austin Texas, this towering Texan was mentored by Jimmie Vaughan, learnt his trade and defined his sound among the Legendary Bars of this Musical Mecca.
Clark has shared the stage with many of Music’s biggest Acts, ranging from joining the Rolling Stones on stage, touring with Eric Clapton, covering a Beatles classic with Dave Grohl and Joe Walsh, Performing the US National Anthem at the NBA All Star Game, without singing a note and probably my favourite….going toe to toe with fellow Contemporary Blues Star, John Mayer at last year’s Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
And like any Blues All Star, the man can deliver an exceptional solo. I still rate his outro Solo from his track ‘When My Train Pulls In’ as one of my favourites of all time, regardless of Genre. The song is a perfect example of Clark’s unique style. A Superb riff, backed by heavy drums, his smooth vocal style and a couple of mind blowing Solos. Take a look for yourself.
Do yourself a favour and check out Gary Clark Jr. His ‘Bright Lights’ EP is a great introduction. The man tours relentlessly, so hopefully there’s some new material in the not too distant future. Also, how could you not dig a guy whose dating a Half Australian/Half Italian model in Nicole Trufino? What’s not to like? Blues and Babe!
